Solar on Low Pitch Roofs: Designing Effective Solutions with Adjustable Tilt Racking
How Adjustable Tilt Racking Enhances Efficiency on Flat and Low Pitch Roofs
Low pitch roofs are becoming increasingly common in contemporary architecture. From shallow skillion designs through to flat commercial roofs, their clean lines and efficient use of space make them appealing from a design perspective. One trade-off, however, is that they can create challenges when integrating solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
Why Angle Matters
Solar panels perform best when installed at an angle that maximises exposure to sunlight while allowing for effective water runoff. On roofs with pitches below around five degrees, achieving this angle can be difficult without the right mounting system. Considerations such as drainage, wind uplift, shading between rows, and structural loading also need to be factored into the design early.
The Solar Solution
Adjustable tilt racking provides a practical way to solve this. Rather than mounting panels directly to the roof surface, the racking elevates them to the optimal angle for solar performance. This improves energy generation, encourages self-cleaning through better rain runoff, and helps reduce the risk of debris building up on near-flat surfaces.
One example is the Clenergy SolarRoof™ Adjustable Tilt system, supplied in New Zealand through Rheem Solar Solutions. Designed for flat and low pitch roofs, the system allows solar panels to be installed at adjustable tilt angles to help achieve optimal solar performance even when the roof itself has minimal slope. The racking is available in black or silver anodised finishes, helping installations sit more comfortably alongside modern roof designs while maintaining a clean, low-profile appearance.
Designed for Flat and Low Pitch Roofs
The SolarRoof™ Adjustable Tilt system is manufactured from high-quality anodised aluminium, providing strength while keeping the overall system lightweight for rooftop installations. The adjustable tilt design allows installers to optimise panel orientation and spacing, helping maximise solar generation while supporting effective drainage and reducing the risk of shading between rows. The system is also backed by a 25-year warranty from Clenergy, supporting long-term performance and reliability.
Making Solar Work on Low Pitch Roofs
With the right mounting technology, low pitch roofs do not need to limit solar performance. Adjustable tilt racking systems allow designers to retain the architectural benefits of shallow roof forms while still achieving efficient, reliable solar generation.
Through Rheem Solar Solutions, architects, builders and installers have access to proven solar systems and technical support to help integrate solar effectively into modern low pitch roof designs.
